Generative AI is a controversial subject in gaming, because people really, really hate it. Just ask Larian, or Owlcat, or Activision. But despite the reputational risk, it is being crowbarred into all aspects of game development in a desperate bid find cost savings and replace human beings, who all annoyingly insist on exchanging their labour in return for money they can spend on goods and services (rude, frankly). But is AI really inevitable, and how bad is it, really?
More and more game development tools are including AI features as standard, often powered by the industry's biggest player, ChatGPT. But its owner, OpenAI, is so over-leveraged that keeping it afloat threatens to cripple the global economy. But letting it collapse also threatens to cripple the global economy. We have, in fact, built the Torment Nexus from the acclaimed scifi novel "Don't Build the Torment Nexus".
