Hot on the heels of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry being awarded to DeepMind’s AlphaFold – an AI model revolutionizing protein structure prediction – the MIT Club of Northern California was excited to host an event exploring the fast-growing field of AI-driven scientific discovery. This technology is increasingly being designed to power autonomous systems that “close the loop” of the scientific method, promising breakthroughs in industries that are highly regulated, capital-intensive, and challenging to scale. We heard from experts including:
+ Aditi Krishnapriyan, Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering and EECS at UC Berkeley where she develops Machine Learning methods for the physical sciences.
+ Arash Khajeh, Postdoctoral research scientist at Toyota Research Institute working on leveraging machine learning to create safer batteries.
+ Aldair Gongora, Scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Lab advancing next-generation research platforms including autonomous robots for science.
+ Wen Jie Ong, MIT PhD and Senior Product Manager at NVIDIA leading AI initiatives in chemistry and material science.

This event was moderated by Alan Gardner (MIT ’05 Course 8; Boston University visiting researcher in autonomous lab infrastructure) and Nabil Laoudji (MIT Sloan ’12 MBA; AI for Science Analyst & Community Builder).
