AI care dolls are keeping some of South Korea’s elderly population company.

With social isolation affecting the country's vulnerable older adults in particular, the cuddly doll “Hyodol” was designed to resemble a grandchild — greeting users when they arrive home, reminding them when to take their medication and encouraging daily interaction.

But health care professionals warn that while AI devices like “Hyodol” provide valuable support, they should complement human relationships rather than replace them entirely.
