Nye Warburton leads the Interactive Design & Game Development department and the new Applied AI Bachelor of Design at SCAD. With more than 20 years of experience across animated films, TV commercials, and video games—including credits on Monster House, Avengers, and Men in Black III—he now focuses on preparing students for careers in gaming, AI workflows, and immersive technologies.

This presentation addresses the most critical challenge in teaching modern game development: how to integrate rapidly evolving Generative AI tools into established Agile workflows without compromising creative vision, team health, or ethical standards. While AI accelerates asset creation exponentially, traditional sprint planning, estimation, and version control often collapse—not from technical failure, but from cultural misalignment.

Drawing on real-world case studies and failures from SCAD's cross-departmental Applied AI initiative and game development curriculum, this session introduces practical, adaptive frameworks. These protocols are designed to ensure student teams and professional studios can successfully absorb disruption, affirming the core thesis that tomorrow's successful developers must master adaptive methodologies.

We share four key, actionable protocols that have been tested and refined by our students:

Agile Sprints in the Classroom: We demonstrate how to modify Scrum rituals by focusing on quantitative prediction of engine and AI outputs, utilizing customized burn-down metrics for task stability, and formalizing exploratory time within the sprint budget for new tool integration.

Version Control and Documentation: Weekly devlogs and establishing the principle that "Prompt is Code," we detail a foundational system for versioning within Perforce (P4V) and Git. Crucially, with AI prompts, this framework highlights the critical need for industry-provided IP tracking and robust version control systems built specifically for generative assets.

Ethical Team Agreements: We advocate for implementing a mandatory "Team AI Integration Agreement" alongside a Five-Question Ethical Framework (IP, Bias, Labor, Environmental, Player Experience) that must be passed before any AI-generated asset is included in the Definition of Done.

Jam and Hackathon Culture: This protocol is about building cultural resilience through time-boxed, celebratory events. These sessions foster the "Permanent Beta" mindset and encourage teams to prototype larger ideas in smaller timespans, directly reducing the fear of constant tool disruption.

This presentation offers concrete solutions for educators and practitioners to build robust, resilient teams capable of translating AI acceleration into creative excellence, rather than just unsustainable chaos.
