Neil Young's Live Rust was a record that changed my life. I was into the heavier rock bands of my youth Judas Priest, Rush, the mighty Black Sabbath. Then this record entered my musical lexicon. I had heard songs like Cinnamon Girl, Like A Hurricane, Hey Hey My My with their wall of noisy and aggressive sounding guitars. Full of feedback and angst, it shook the foundation what I thought made music cool. But then at the same time it introduced me to Mr Young's songs without the volume and electric guitar. Needle and the Damage Done, Sugar Mountain, Comes a Time and of course After the Gold Rush. It opened a door to musical horizons like country, folk, jam bands, stoner rock, punk. The songs were simple and the band even a little sloppy at times but no less powerful. Some of the first songs I learned on guitar were Powder Finger and Cortez from this record.
My version of one of my favorite songs of all time. I am sure some say a piano is all this song needs. I guess that is true if you are Neil. I am not so lucky so I here is my version.
