Today marks 39 years since the passing of the Māori Language Act, a landmark moment that recognised te reo Māori as an official language of Aotearoa and established Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission).
One nostalgic way to mark the occasion is by revisiting a familiar face from Kiwi childhoods. As host of weekday favourite ‘After School’, Olly Ohlson became the first Māori presenter to anchor his own children's programme, helping break new ground for the use of te reo Māori on our screens — even before the Māori Language Act was passed.
