September 30, 2008. 11:05 AM. Monroe, Washington. In a strip mall parking lot between a Jack in the Box and a Bank of America branch, about a dozen men in yellow safety vests, respirator masks, and blue shirts stand together, checking their watches. They had all responded to a Craigslist landscaping job listing earlier that week. It promised good pay and short-term work. The ad told them to show up here, at 11am, wearing this exact outfit, and wait for a project manager.
It’d been five minutes and still no one had arrived to meet them yet.
But one go-getter had decided not to wait and was already hard at work on a patch of grass beside the Jack In The Box, spraying weeds.
That was until a Brink's armored truck pulled up beside the bank and a guard stepped out and began transferring cash bags into the building.
Seeing this, that one working landscaper stopped what he was doing, dropped his tools, and sprinted toward the guard to release a burst of bear spray directly into the man's face. The bear spray caused the guard to collapse and scream.
The landscaper then grabbed two heavy cash bags and ran toward a tree line at the edge of the lot, where he disappeared in the foliage.
The entire sequence took less than sixty seconds. And when the officers arrived at the parking lot a few minutes later, they found nearly a dozen men standing there, all matching the same description as the suspect.
Over the next hour, helicopters circled the town while K-9 units swept the creek and surrounding woods. Roadblocks went up across nearby streets. But the search turned up nothing useful. Only a discarded blue shirt, a two-way radio tossed onto the muddy bank, and a black and yellow inner tube with a cartoon bee printed on it, bumping against the water's edge with the current.
The man who had taken two cash bags containing over $400,000 in broad daylight was gone. And no one had any idea who he was.
