African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) | Kruger National Park
In today’s video we are celebrating the African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) | Kruger National Park.
Cape buffalo, (Syncerus caffer caffer), the largest and most formidable of Africa’s wild bovids (family Bovidae) and a familiar sight to visitors of African parks and reserves. The Cape buffalo is the only member of the buffalo and cattle tribe (Bovini) that occurs naturally in Africa. There are five subspecies that are recognized as valid by most authorities with the Cape Buffalo being the largest.
The Cape buffalo is sometimes referred to as the mafia of the bush. They have the tendency to take revenge on other animals and even humans and have been known to circle back, stalk and attack or kill hunters.
You can distinguish between adult males and females by looking at their horns. If the base of their two horns come together and form a solid structure (called a boss) then it is a male. The horns of an adult buffalo cow don't touch.
The global population of this unique bovid is estimated at 900,000 animals.
Cape buffalos are extremely social and live in large, mixed herds of up to 2000 members! Both sexes have a separate hierarchy, with males dominant over females. Members of the same subgroup will stay in direct contact with each other and will often sleep with their heads resting on one another.
By living in large herds and eating tall coarse grasses, Cape buffalo play a vital role in the ecology of the grasslands. Many of the smaller grazers are unable to digest the tall grasses, and the tall grasses may prevent them from getting to the shorter, more palatable grasses in the absence of buffalo.
