Kellen Gray has reunited with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for a second instalment of African American Voices. Though representing differing schools of thought regarding African American classical music, the composers here are united by their roots in black history, culture and its rich musical heritage. Drawing upon jazz and spirituals – ‘I Want Jesus to Walk with Me’ serving as the source material – Margaret Bonds’ Montgomery Variations engages with African American history, namely the Montgomery bus boycott and the 1963 Birmingham church bombing. In this work, re-discovered in 2017, Bonds tackles the themes of strength, resistance, determination and faith. Bonds’ contemporary, the prolific composer Ulysses Kay cultivated a neoclassical voice, as his Concerto for Orchestra exemplifies, very much in line with William Grant Still and his teacher Paul Hindemith. A versatile musician, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson comes a generation later. In his Worship: A Concert Overture, we can hear a blend of Baroque counterpoint, elements of the blues, spirituals and black folk music.

Linn is delighted to announce a new collaboration with violinist Jonian Ilias Kadesha. This highly distinctive musician has worked with leading artists and orchestras such as Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Nicolas Altstaedt, Steven Isserlis and Patricia Kopatchinskaja to name but a few. For his debut album on Linn, he has recorded a high-flying recital of solo violin pieces spanning five centuries. One of the oldest pieces of music written for solo violin, Biber’s angelic and absolutely mesmerizing Passacaglia stands alongside Bach’s enduringly famous Second Partita, whose last movement is the starting point for the Ciaccona for Violin Solo by Swiss composer Helena Winkelman, which receives its first commercial recording here. Twentieth- and twenty-first-century works by Schnittke, Kurtág and Lera Auerbach, all heavily inspired by Bach’s music, complete the programme which augurs a fruitful partnership with a promising young talent.

Released to coincide with his third season as Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Robin Ticciati has forged a close and highly successful partnership with his orchestra. This, his fourth recording with DSO Berlin, continues his series of music by French composers (Debussy, Fauré, Ravel, Duparc) with a significant move into choral music: the Duruflé Requiem. Ticciati is joined by mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, who has performed Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées and Duparc songs on previous DSO recordings, and the Grammy award-winning Rundfunkchor Berlin. Written in response to Fauré’s own Requiem and with Debussy’s influence paramount, Duruflé created one of the most significant sacred works of the twentieth century. Ticciati describes this masterpiece as “a balm for the soul, a score filled with tremendous hope and peaceful searching”. Most typically recorded with organ accompaniment, Ticciati has chosen to record Duruflé’s own orchestrated version which allows the conductor to create a unique blend of choral and orchestral colours recalling the sound-world of Debussy and the Impressionists. Fittingly the programme also includes Debussy’s Nocturnes, a welcome addition following the critically-acclaimed reception of Ticciati’s recording of La mer.

Following its acclaimed Linn debut recording, Copland & Chávez: Pan-American Reflections, The Orchestra of the Americas releases its sophomore album with its Music Director, Carlos Miguel Prieto. Prieto is joined by fellow Mexican and celebrated pianist Jorge Federico Osorio, who brings his superb musicianship, powerful technique, vibrant imagination and deep passion to this all-Spanish programme. Osorio is the soloist in Falla’s highly atmospheric piano concerto, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a set of symphonic impressions which conjures up the enticing sounds and scents of a summer’s evening. Conductor and pianist received critical acclaim following their performance of this work in Ireland: ‘Prieto elicited a diaphanous palette of colours [and] as Osorio’s arpeggios shimmered up and down the piano we were magnetically drawn into this highly evocative world full of lush sounds and sensuous possibilities’ (BachTrack). Falla’s masterpiece The Three-Cornered Hat is both vibrant and colourful and showcases the ‘superb precision’ of The Orchestra of the Americas. Falla’s finely crafted and meticulous work ensures that the piece’s folklore-based melodies are consistently accompanied by exquisite background music. The programme is completed by the Interlude & Dance from Falla’s La vida breve and the well-known Intermezzo from Granados’ Goyescas.
