Afghans celebrate their 99th Independence Day across Afghanistan today. President Ashraf Ghani laid a wreath at the Minaret of Independence at Ministry of Defense in Kabul Sunday morning, to celebrate the country’s independence. The ceremony was well attended by national government leaders, high ranking officials, members of the parliament, as well as foreign ambassadors and Resolute Support military officials and advisors to name a few.
The Afghan Independence day honors Shah Amanullah Khan's defeat of the British Empire in 1919 and the founding of the nation. Afghanistan gained it’s independence from Britain after signing the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1919. Although never part of the British Empire, the treaty granted complete neutral relations between Afghanistan and Britain.
