After a 22-hour flight from Houston to Nairobi, followed by an 8-hour drive to Samburu, our team made it to Kenya to meet with our conservation partners, Ewaso Lions. Hear more from Ben Jones, our vice president of conservation and education.

The team was first welcomed by an intrepid group of local women, Mama Simba, who are working to restore wildlife habitat by removing invasive mesquite and replanting native grasses throughout their community.

Later, they observed the Warrior Watch program, founded by Jeneria, a past recipient of the Zoo’s Wildlife Warrior program, which recognizes and supports individuals making significant contributions to wildlife conservation around the world.

These young men are educated on the ways they can coexist with wildlife, their communities, and livestock. Upon graduation from the program, the day concluded with a conservation game for the young men to participate in to better understand the threats lions face in the wild, inspiring a deeper sympathy for this incredible animal. Stay tuned for more trip highlights coming this month!
