From my 2024 archive:
I am sure that there is a witty way to describe today’s Advent Shaker Calendar – featuring some salvaged plastic piping from a bathroom renovation – but I’m curious. How would you describe these two shakers?
Video Transcript:
Well the Advent Shaker today, actually two shakers again. And these are old pipes from my bathroom earlier this year, when it was being redone. So I salvaged them from the plumber!
Video Description:
Evelyn is stood beside a very old, heavy mobile church organ, with dark brown casing. She shows us the shaker she has created today, as part of her Advent Shaker Calendar (where she is making a new shaker every day in the lead-up to Christmas), describing what it is made from, and then demonstrates it.

![Evelyn Explores... | Creating a dark landscape with a GM Designs Cymbal, ping pong balls and Timpani
An improvisation to see what foley sounds can be produced using a GM Designs Cymbal on top of a timpani, utilising ping pong balls, super ball mallets, a bass bow and metal Korean chopstick. The aim is to create an eerie, dark soundscape.
00:00 - Evelyn introduces the GM Designs Cymbal
00:40 - ...and then improvises bringing a dramatic, sometimes haunting, sometimes echoing, sometimes screechy series of sounds which feel like an alien planet
02:55 - Evelyn speaks about her social media, todays video, and subscribing options
03:28 - Suggestions on what to watch next
Transcript: Well, this is a wonderful creation by GM Designs, and its like a sculptural cymbal or gong, whatever you would like to call it, but it really is quite beautiful to look at and amazing to explore.
So, Im just going to pop it gently on top of this timpani and have it hanging over a little bit. And uh and Im just going to explore using a couple of ping pong balls. And so this is just more foley creation, you know, building a fairly dark landscape.
[Evelyn uses a variety of tools to explore the possibilities, creating a darkly strange soundscape]
Video description: Evelyn is stood beside her 52-inch timpani, and places a GM Designs Cymbal on top of it, leaving it to hang just over the edge. She then uses a variety of tools to explore the possibilities, creating a strange and occasionally frightening soundscape.
[Disclaimer: Evelyn was gifted the GM Designs Cymbal but has not received payment to promote or endorse it.]

![An unexpected guest... the return! | Evelyn and Sandi Toksvig
Our unexpected visitor came back for more! This time, requesting a ‘jolly party’ sound, and leaving with the perfect instrument*…
@TheQIElves #QI #SandiToksvig #EvelynGlennie #TheEvelynGlennieCollection
Video description: the clip opens with Evelyn still cleaning her Marimba, as Sandi returns. Behind Evelyn, we can see a huge number of percussion instruments of all shapes, sizes and materials, and in front of her on a table rests an antique piano and a Richard Waters Waterphone.
Their discussion, included as embedded captions, goes as follows:
[Evelyn is still cleaning the Marimba]
Sandi: Hi Evelyn. I, look, I know I didn’t buy the Marimba.
Evelyn: No.
S: The thing is I was thinking of something with a bit more of a party sound. Have you got something?
E: Oh, ok. Yep, I’ve got the ideal instrument.
[Evelyn bows the Waterphone]
S: (nodding, smiling, and reaching out to pause Evelyn) Perfect!
E: Oh, fantastic!
S: Thanks so much. I’ll leave the fiver downstairs.
[Sandi leaves holding the Waterphone and bass bow]
E: (exclaiming incredulously and with amusement) Fiver?!

Video description: Evelyn is reading Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, A Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion, looking between the book and us, the audience, as she reads to us in an expressive, animated fashion. Behind her are some blue shelves with an array of percussion instruments.
In this clip she reads the following passage:
They welcomed her into the [Royal] Academy [of Music], and after that, every music school in Great Britain changed its rules. Everyone agreed - no-one should be turned away simply because of a disability.
