I read Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Dream Count and I felt conflicted in the retelling of Chia and Darnell… I read it three times, and i needed each one to really get a good handle on the perspective of the characters. Does Darnell mastermind Chia's emotional surrender— or can Chia not catch a hint ?
I mean yea you can see it as sucking out her generosity and labor like a colonial power grab, and if this were an academic paper, yes that’s my argument, butttt…..
In addition to this postcolonial analysis exposing the sneaky mind games that echo the imperialistic attitudes of our American forefathers, we gotta ask why did she stay so long? Like girl… HES JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU
