A contingent of Australian Army personnel from the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, Australian Army Band and supporting elements travelled to the Republic of Korea to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong. The contingent toured the battlefields and conducted a commemoration service, as well as participating in the ANZAC Day service in Seoul, Korea.
In April 1951, soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, against overwhelming odds, stalled the Chinese advance and prevented Seoul from falling. This became the most significant battle for Australian troops in the Korean War. The Battle of Kapyong remains a defining moment in the Battalion’s history: 32 Australians were killed and 53 wounded. In recognition of their courage, the Battalion was awarded the US Distinguished Unit Citation and the battle honour ‘KAPYONG’, which it proudly carries today.
