In this video I show lots of ways to add a shadow to your characters in OpenToonz. However, along the way I offer tips for colouring, using layers (columns), different brush effects and adding other effects. I could easily have broken this video into separate videos, but all the techniques are dealing with adding shadows, so I decided to leave them in a single video. However, to help you navigate through it and revisit areas to go over complicated areas, I've added shortcuts here:
01:47 Using the palette for colour and alpha
02:59 Change the shadow brightness using the column opacity
04:08 Change the shadow brightness using the transparency effect
05:53 Working with Vector Levels
08:07 Working with Toonz Raster Levels
11:15 Working with Raster Levels
13:58 Use a Matte In FX, to constrain the shadow to the character
17:37 Use Multiply INO FX, to constrain the shadow to the character
19:57 Use Palette Filter FX to constrain the shadow to a specific colour
25:48 Using the plastic mesh as a clipping frame

![[New Feature] Filtering brushes & adding brush favourites in OpenToonz
Here’s another new feature: Brush searching & pinning.
This allows you to quickly find the brushes that youre after, and maybe discover some new ones! And when youve found your favourites, you can pin them to the top of the list, so you dont have to search for them again.
With huge thanks to JustBurner for adding this new feature.

![[New Feature] Easy fills EVERY TIME in OpenToonz
Here’s another new feature: Easy filling with the new Pick & Freehand mode type for the bucket fill. This tool lets you pick a palette entry and then draw a freehand shape around an area to fill. You don’t have to keep choosing the colour from the palette list first. Just click and drag. It’s a huge time saver and will fill those small gaps EVERY time.
With huge thanks to JustBurner for adding this new feature.
