Adapting classic stories can sometimes become redundant when it has nothing new to say. Every version of Peter Pan is basically the same. The same can be said for many classic tales. Romeo and Juliet might be one of the best exceptions. West Side Story brings the elements of Shakespeare into 20th century New York and makes the story about racism and love.
