// Here are somethings I wish I explained better if at all //
Even though my life was really good on paper, and by far the best I ever had things going for me, it wasn’t a life that resonated with my deepest self. My intuition had been whispering but I never learned to trust that voice and fear lead me to follow a path that other people and society had for me. When I looked around most people seemed trapped in unconscious lives full of suffering, myself included, and I found it so unsettling. When my life finally got to a point where I had freedom (time, space, awareness, maturity, and finances) to relax and really just enjoy being in the physical world the universe basically sat me down with all my issues and forced feed me them to deal with. My depression has almost always been trying to tell me something is wrong, or that I miss and loved someone, or that I’m too hard on myself with my thoughts and need to forgive and let go. I kept trying to make the life I was living loud enough to drown out the little voice inside of me that said this isn’t what I’m here for anymore. The climax of that internal disagreement is basically what I believe lead to my dark night of the soul. I felt completely drained of life force, like a candle wick that refused to catch flame or a car that had to be started every few minutes just to last another half mile. I was exhausted just from existence and already felt more dead than alive on top of the sadness. When I started to feel better I only wanted to enjoying living. Life felt short, I didn’t know if or when I would be depressed again so I cherished feeling well like it was a timer about to go off again. This is a video I made a little bit after that time: youtu.be/LYdkkjbHL1A Since I didn’t know how much time I had I felt very comfortable taking what felt like a huge risk to me outside of being completely reckless. This is when I finally allowed my life to change in a way that felt very intense. I know I have a lot of privilege in this area. I’m single, I’m able-bodied, I don’t have kids, I have a career that when I think outside of the box I can be flexible and plan unemployment around. I have also chosen and worked hard for all those things consciously for eight years before I saw any crazy excitement from it, and personally believe it’s taken me several lifetimes to get to this point. I also don’t believe you have to have a full break down and exit your life to connect to yourself, I just don’t tend to pay attention to things that aren’t extreme and obvious so the universe tends to slap me around a bit until I get the point.
***
Between my dark night and the time I spent in India and able to get a fresh perceptive nearly everything that I cared about was reevaluated. My prioritizes, my attachments, my goals, and things that I used to define me faded and changed. Youtube was something I completely let go of, with full resistance at first. I was on the verge of deleting my channel until I felt like it was right to come back and share again. I’m beyond nervous to come back, especially with THIS video, but also because I see my future content being very different than before. I’m excited for those of you that stick around and totally understand that this isn’t going to resonate with everyone.

I held off on taking antidepressants because when my depression was this bad (10/10) and I am on medication I just felt a void in the space where I would have felt sadness. Instead of depression, there is just a vast hollow space where I felt absolute nothingness and the person I am is totally erased. I would be so far out of my body and I didn’t recognize myself, when I looked in a mirror I would see a totally numb and blank version of who I normally am. I was waiting it out hoping eventually I would feel better since I didn’t prefer the zombie feeling over the suffering in sadness. I definitely wasn’t in the most rational mindset and not taking the best care of myself.

I have everything I need to be comfortable, prepared for reasonable “what ifs” and nothing extra. I don't need every single item for every trip but I'm showing you everything I could pack depending on the location/length of trip/weather and it all fits into a 3 liter bag. Technically I could travel with a bit less but everything listed here makes me feel like I have a little bathroom home away from home. Thanks for watching!

The next link below has the most information I can find on endo and medical treatment options. As always please do your own research and find a doctor who listens and works with you. This video is not advice and I just wanted to share my experience, bring some awareness to the issue, and maybe make a few other people feel a bit less alone if they also have endo.
Reasons you SHOULD NOT steam: tinyurl.com/y2t33j27 Steaming isn’t conventional treatment and there are plenty of reasons not to steam and a lot of misinformation about steaming to “cleanse” your vagina that is just wrong. PLEASE do research to see if this is safe for you.

Here is everything I own that I won't be carrying with me when I return to the states this summer and start travel nursing.
My tips for downsizing sentimental items: 1. Realize that the memory/event/person that an item reminds you of is just a reminder and you don't have to have something physical to remember those times. 2. Consider keeping part of something instead of the whole. 3. It's awesome to have some sentimental things that you treasure and bring a smile to your face, just make sure your stuff does own you and the amount isn't overwhelming. 4. Take it slow when it comes to sentimental things. 5. Display items what can also be used for decor on walls and shelves. 6. When it comes to taking in new sentimental things keep items small when possible.

I had 8 days off from work and my Mom gets standby flight (the leftover empty seats are given to employees for cheap) benefits with her job making this entire trip under $1.1k with the flights and renting the car. This is a bit of a travel vlog fail but I learned a lot about what I need to change so that I can on future trips. Hence I just bought a bad ass new camera (video coming soon) so that I don't have to lug around and point a huge dslr camera at my face when I'm trying to experience new a place.
Besides documenting the trip I actually had an amazing time and loved each city, plus I meet some awesome people at the hostel in Seattle. I traveled solo to each city but meet up with friends for one day in each place. I personally think you need two full days to experience Seattle and one-two for Portland. Once I come back to the states after my India trip this spring I hope to move somewhere on along the west coast! I loved the nature, how much more progressive the cities are than where I currently live and being able to use public transit.

☾ Music by Ian PostWhy I Got A Hamster After College | Minimalism & PetsJanell Kristina2018-09-21 | I was a Resident Assistant while in university and because of that I was not allowed to have pets while living and working on campus. I was so excited when I could finally get one, but I'd seen to many of my friends get a pet they couldn't care for and end up surrendering, neglecting, or forced the care onto loved ones. I didn't want to change my lifestyle for an animal and that's why Sun was the perfect fit for me. Whether or small I think pets can help a lot of people be more mindful, benefit their mental health, and are just fun to have! Minimalism help me choose a pet that was a good fit for me, but my no means are tiny fur balls the only way to go.
☾ INSTAGRAM @janellkristina goo.gl/mPQlhTBroke, Poor, and a Minimalist?Janell Kristina2018-09-14 | I get a lot of messages and comments saying people working with tight finances can't do minimalism because it's to expensive or believe that only people coming from privilege can do it. I started minimalism in a year that I made a total of $5,800 (it's on my tax return I promise) and when I didn't see many other Youtubers of color or "poorer" ones sharing their journey. Minimalism gave me a lot of power and control in a time when I felt I didn't have much over my own life and finances and I just wanted to share a bit of that with you guys. YES minimalism often can and will look very different for people with different funds, but that isn't a reason to completely reject the concept. There is so much more to minimalism than just stuff and I believe everyone can take away something positive from the lifestyle regardless of how much money you have. You can check out my older videos to see how I did minimalism while hustling with three jobs and being a nursing student.

I'm 6 months away from this trip but here is an update on my life and plans for the nearish future! It's actually cheaper to fly to India and back to learn yoga there than to take a course at a studio in my area, especially since I won't be paying rent while I'm gone. Let me know if you guys want to hear about where I am planning to go and budgeting/planning this trip.

Let me know below if you like this type of travel video or want to see more about minimalism next, I missed you guys!Minimal Travel Packing | New REI Ruckpack 40 L ReviewJanell Kristina2018-03-14 | Next video will be my Costa Rica vlog, I didn’t film much but I’m excited to show you what I did get. We were there for 10 days did some moderate long hikes, climbed a water fall, stayed next to a river, lots of beach activities, and stayed in the jungle most of the time. This video is not sponsored, kinda wish it was so that way I would have an excuse for my backpack obsession. Links are below if you are interested, but for the sake of minimalism shop mindfully!
In hindsight I should have brought more shirts. I didn’t really use my DSLR much because I was constantly in wet, sandy, or sweaty environments. My next trip like this I will definitely invest in a cute sun hat. Pura Vida!
Love and light to all you beautiful internet peoplesFrozen in Chicago | My first solo trip & How I did itJanell Kristina2018-02-22 | So I found cheap tickets to Chicago and on a whim found myself there five days later. This is how I did it:
☀ I used skyscanner.com to find the cheapest dates to fly, but booked directly through the airline. ☀ I packed light – one school sized carryon bag to get a cheaper plane seat and because I would be walking around the city all day with that bag with everything I packed. Check out the Girls Love Travel Facebook page for tons of helpful recommendations! ☀ I traveled in winter, a less touristy time and everywhere I went was uncrowded with little to no waits. ☀ The hostel I stayed at is Hi Chicago ☀ I put all the locations I was interested in on googles maps, then downloaded the offline map of the city to plan when I went where.
I was shocked about how fearful I was doing a trip completely alone and now how empowered I feel after doing it! Overall everything went amazing I am already planning my next solo trip. Let me know if you have questions below!

ABOUT EF: I discovered EF though a facebook ad, but didn't take it seriously until a friend of mine went to Italy and loved the trip so much he booked another trip for Greece with some of the travelers he meet on the first trip. I talk so highly about the company because it made traveling possible for me and I know it can for others looking to do something similar. If you are considering a trip with EF send me your email and I can get you $100 USD off your trip and my next one! (I am in the process of trying to get a link to do this so you don't have to email me.)

I had filmed and wanted to upload this two weeks ago, but this semester was brutal before it even started. There is no way I'll be able to keep up on YouTube for a while, but I promise when it's all over I will be back! Make sure you subscribe and (hopefully, for my sake at least) this semester will be over before we know it.
IG: janellkristinaMinimalist Apartment Tour!Janell Kristina2016-08-05 | New apartment, new tour! I’ve changed a lot of the stuff over the last year and while I didn’t make decluttering videos you can watch my old apartment tour as a comparison. I’m still just a struggling college student, but I love this new flat so much more!
***** Update as of 8/24/16 ***** I’ve gotten a ton of comments saying that this isn’t minimalist enough or something along the lines of that and I just wanted to respond to those thoughts. The goal of minimalism is not about having less, it’s about making room for what matters. How you spend your time, the quality of your relationships, and doing things that make you feel alive are vastly more important than owning under X amount things. Owning a “minimal” amount of stuff is just a tool to do those things and will vary a lot depending on each person’s needs, wants, and where they are in their downsizing journey. I said at the very beginning of the video that I am a senior in nursing school; I also do photography, and have two jobs. I have to keep a lot of stuff for all of these things (even thought I wish I could get rid of a lot of it). Also I’m not a full time traveler so owning things like my rice cooker and coffee machine make my life easier and I use them all the time, so there is no need to get rid of them. The three plants I have make me happy. The washer, dryer, ad fridge are university owned and included in my rent. The tapestry and photo wall are easy to move, fold up to the size of a hand towel, and were cost effective ways to decorate a large area. To me they definitely minimal alternatives to having lots of expensive and fragile frames or bulky wall decor. Minimalism doesn’t have to be impersonal or all black and white. There are no rules or policies to follow. All the hate in the comments section of this video is really disappointing. Yes, I have non essential items in my flat, but it's a journey and I am enjoying it. I have simplified lots of other areas of my life other than stuff and you can watch my "Why Minimalism" video to know more about that.
To the majority of you who left lovely comments and responses to others, thank you for the love.
xoxo
P.S. For those of you asking about my bed it’s a very firm memory foam. I actually think I prefer firm spring mattresses, but I’m happy enough with it. I have since purchased a foldable bed frame due Texas’s summer cricket apocalypse and having too many unwanted visitors in my apartment. The bed is called a Millard Trifold Mattress and the bed frame is called Zinus 14” Smart base bed frame. I bought both from Amazon for under $200

↠ Music: bensound.comShoe CollectionJanell Kristina2016-06-02 | Quick video of all the shoes I own! I need to replace the combat boots and the Keds because they are currently being held together with super glue, but I’m replacing them with white vans and the Steven Madden Troppa boots eventually. When it’s time to replace the flats I’ll get them in black next time. I know this could definitely be more minimal, but it is perfect for me in my current lifestyle/climate. I wear the keds, boots (in winter and rain), birks the most for casual wear.
