After the loss at Perryville, Kentucky and low on supplies, Bragg retreated back into Tennessee where he joined with Smith’s Army of Kentucky. He took up a defensive position northwest of Murfreesboro along the Stones River. Frustrated with General Buell's passivity, President Lincoln replaced him with General Rosecrans. Rosecrans was warned that he too would be replaced if he did not move aggressively against Bragg and occupy eastern Tennessee. He marched his Army of the Cumberland from Nashville, TN to challenge General Bragg’s Army of the Tennessee at Murfreesboro.
By the time Rosecrans arrived, Bragg had already been there for a month. His men had marched through freezing, bone-chilling winter rain and are tired but there's no time to lose.
Bragg has a small window to attack the Union before they fully arrive.
