… This is quite possibly one of the LAST “off the cuff” interviews late actor MICHAEL MADSEN ever gave in recent months.
… Madsen, who performed in myriad films such as “Reservoir Dogs”, “Kill Bill Vol. 2”, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” and more over the years died today from cardiac arrest at the age of 67.
… Only three months ago, in March, I was hired to interview Madsen for a “behind the scenes” feature for an upcoming independent film.
… The film, “The Monsters of Manhattan” has a superhero theme and I was hired to ask about his performance and participation in the film; and about the superhero film genre in general.
… Time and the purpose of the interview didn’t permit asking questions specifically about Madsen’s marvelous career in Hollywood. However, we managed to sidestep into Madsen’s opinions about Hollywood, and his reflections on his own films.
It was at first, a challenging interview for me. He arrived on set, direct from the airport; a bit jet-lagged and tired. While gracious, he didnt seem terribly excited about being interviewed.
But gradually, Madsen opened up about his career in film; both with pride, and also some wistful regrets.
Madsen said he’s enjoyed playing bad guys in films over the years. However, he wistfully added that it would’ve been nice to get more heroic roles as well.
“It gets boring only playing bad guys”, said Madsen.
He also had some critical thoughts about the state of filmmaking in Hollywood; saying it lacks new material, quality and some in the industry are inexperienced.
But, on this day of Michael Madsen’s passing; it’s bittersweet - and perhaps prophetic - to listen to his assessment of his career from just three months
ago, when I had the pleasure of informally chatting with him.
“I’ve made some good pictures”, Madsen said. “I’ve been very lucky and blessed.”
“… I’ve had a good run.”
