Quebec prides itself on its progressive stance towards 2S/LGBTQIA+ rights. It was one of the first jurisdictions to legislate against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (1976), to authorize same-sex marriage (2002) and to develop a national policy to combat queerphobia (2011). In fact, it recently renewed its action plan in this regard (2023-2028). However, Quebec is not immune to the rise in transphobic and homophobic hate speech that has been observed around the world. This backlash takes the form of growing polarization in discourse and increasing disinformation on queer and trans realities—for example, there were anti-drag protests in 2023, and the Radio-Canada documentary “TransExpress,” which aired as part of the show Enquête in February 2024. We are not immune to moral panics or media circuses around sex education, access to gender-affirming care or all-gender washrooms, youth gender transitions, or the art of drag, all of which are depicted by multiple commentators, conservative associations, and even political figures, as threats to women’s rights and to children.
