In this interview with Geoff Plummer, Executive Business Manager at Davcor Group, we focus on the differences between mechanical, electronic and digital key systems — and why there’s no single “best” solution.

The primary message is clear: security works best as a layered approach.

Depending on the environment, different technologies make more sense. In harsh or dirty environments — even extreme examples like naval vessels or infrastructure exposed to the elements — mechanical locks often offer durability and reliability. In contrast, high-traffic environments like a 50-storey office tower typically demand electronic access control systems, such as proximity cards, where managing large volumes of users is critical.

For remote utilities or mobile phone towers, a hybrid or electro-mechanical system can deliver the best of both worlds — combining the resilience of mechanical hardware with the tracking and flexibility of electronic control.
