Abstract: Where am I, and how did I get here? We have lived on the “outside” of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries for 17 years and still carry our past with us. Family members and friends still living in the group are connections we never really break. As we try to acclimate to society, the learning curve that each one of us experiences is more accurately described as a mountain climb, with jagged edges, intruding rocks, starts and stops, and movements forward, back, up and down. Even though we are similar in age and lived in the same cultic group, most of us are moving in very different directions as we grow older.
We all, even siblings, cope differently with our personal battles, victories, fears, and losses. We are people with layers inside of us, and while our coping mechanisms vary, our individual issues and challenges correlate once we zoom out and view our group as a whole. Panelists will tell stories of their ventures outside the cult, revealing their own mechanisms to cope with emotional conflict, fear, loss, and the elements that have brought them to the stage today.
