One year after the landmark Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, Texas — a battleground state for abortion rights and bodily autonomy — is in our spotlight once again. Gerrymandered by the Republican minority, Texas has become a testing ground for restrictive policies that tend to permeate throughout the US.

Today, we examine the ripple effects of the escalating abortion debate, as well as ongoing transgender and voting rights issues. The state's laws could serve as a forecast of the future for women, girls, and the LGBTQ+ community nationwide, influencing women's rights, trans rights and democracy at large. What future do Texans envision for their state?

Our guests in this episode advocate for innovative organizing as the catalyst for change. They address the expanding backlash and discuss inventive strategies to counter it. Join us as we converse with Caroline Duble, the political director of Avow, a staunch pro-abortion organization dedicated to safeguarding abortion access and promoting reproductive health, rights, and justice.

We also speak with Eesha Pandit, co-founder of the Center for Advancing Innovative Policy (CAIP), where she develops intersectional approaches to policy change, and Emmett Schelling, the director of the Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT), a committed advocate for gender diverse equality in the state.

“In order for these bans on healthcare to be enforced, they require policing and surveillance and criminalization. We need to look to the leadership of Black advocates, of people who have been fighting the carceral state for decades. They were warning us about the dangers of criminalization and over-policing and surveillance long before this abortion ban existed.” - Caroline Duble

“The legal and legislative responses are vital. They are however, in a state like Texas, harm reduction approaches . . . We're trying to protect people's rights, and that often looks like stemming a legislative tide rather than enacting proactive things that will actually protect us and our families and our vision for our state.” - Eesha Pandit

“This was horrifically bad. We saw a record number of Texans come out in full opposition, to oppose seeing medical care rolled back and families targeted, physicians targeted, especially in a post-pandemic world that we still live in.” - Emmett Schelling
