Making them by hand is a different kind of keeping. The body starts with yellow chenille stems wound tight and packed dense, so the finished bird has some weight to it instead of going flat. Red pipe cleaner shapes the comb and the splayed feet; a snip of orange makes the beak, and black beads do more work than they should — set them close together and the face reads sweet, set them apart and you get something else entirely.
