The Eurovision Song Contest of 1974 has a special place in the history of the competition, not because of its presenter, Katie Boyle’s striking resemblance to Margaret Thatcher, nor because of the rather disturbing use of dolls and a barrel organ by the singers from the Netherlands, nor because of Olivia Newton-John’s rendition of 'Long Live Love'; the 1974 competition was important because it signalled the emergence of the Swedish band, ABBA, whose charismatic performance of 'Waterloo' won the competition, propelled them to international celebrity and led to them to become one of the most famous groups in the history of pop music.
This short video is a brief introduction to this striking moment in Eurovision history, and to ABBA’s breakthrough hit, 'Waterloo'.
