In part three of the China series, we're exploring the abandoned Wenzhou Dolphin Bay Dream Water Park. The water park, costing millions of Chinese yuan to build, opened to great fanfare in the summer of 2014. Guest ratings were typically high, and it enjoyed a few years of success.
But by 2017, the park's owner had only paid back half of its debts to the construction company, leading to legal proceedings and eventual bankruptcy. Subsequent auction attempts have been unsuccessful, with the water park's auction value diminishing from 63 million Chinese yuan to 25 million.
At the time of our exploration, the water park had been abandoned, and its foundations sinking, for two years. Once again, we encountered security and even local farmers who had moved into the derelict administrative building. After a 5-hour train trip and an unexpectedly bumpy taxi ride, we set out to explore the derelict water park.

Chris Luckhardt has documented and photographed some of the most iconic and viral images of abandoned places around the world. He was among the first photographers to publish photos in the press from legendary abandoned places like Hashima Island, Nara Dreamland, Michigan Central Station, and Six Flags New Orleans. His body of work has led to collaborations with The White House, Netflix, Ford, GQ China, ABC News, Good Morning America, Scholastic Canada, Yahoo! Japan, and many more. In 2016, the Obama administration invited Chris to photograph a private citizen "haunted" tour of The White House.
