Johnathan Draper Richardson, his wife Victoria and their three young children left their home in Los Angeles, California, in 1896. With all their belongings packed into a covered wagon and their two horses, they set off across the deserts, travelling over 350 miles to their destination. Settling into what was once an old army post, they began the arduous task of making a homestead. Building a house and planting a lush vegetable garden and orchard which bared apples, pears, figs and apricots. Later, a small hotel was built and a gas station to supply the ever-increasing numbers of travellers. The road leading through the ranch was maintained with simple hand tools. Victoria passed away in 1935. Five years later, Johnathan passed, and the ranch went into decline. The house still stands, along with the small hotel and large chicken coop. Remains of other buildings litter the surrounding area. Unfortunately, due to vandals, little is left of the gas station. The pumps have gone leaving only their foundation, and a few bricks were strewn around. If you look carefully, you can find where the gardens and orchards once were.
