On a recent #roadtrip up into far north #Queensland I drove past this old abandoned road house and got the opportunity to explore it. I'd driven past this place so many time over the years and have seen it's decline. With new upgrades to the highway over the years and more big corporate fuel company's building huge fuel stops alone the route it has just been a matter of time before these original road houses end up just being a memory. I remember in the early years of me driving up that way there were very long distances between fuel stops and it was a definite necessity to have to stop at this place before running out of fuel and it was always a bit of a tense game watching the fuel gauge hoping you'd make it in time before actually running out of petrol. Anyone familiar with #route66 would have an idea of what it used to be like travelling in quite remote areas like this and then with road by passes and upgrades these places end up just left abandoned and a ghost of what they used to be. I don't have any information of what might have happened to the owner of this place but maybe he got too old or may have died because of the amount of belongings left behind. Also as you can see there was accommodation for road works crews to stay while out doing what ever they were doing alone the highway. All very basic and built with what ever materials that could be accessed as is visible from the raw posts that were used in the structure. You can also see that most of Queensland is in drought and it was extremely dry and on the verge of turning into a dust bowl. Hopefully the drought will break soon. Unfortunately I still can't remember the area this is in. I did write it down but silly me lost the bit of paper I wrote it on. DOH!! It is somewhere between Rockhampton and Townsville.
