This one was unfortunately not stored very well. The good thing is that it DOES give us a good example of what can happen to an MRE when it's not stored under the best of conditions. We've kind of gotten used to seeing vintage MREs in great (and edible) shape that we kind of think of MREs as something that will seemingly last practically forever. But that extra-long shelf life can only happen if care is taken while storing them for years and years.

gschultz9 Livestream: 1986 Ham and Chicken Loaf MRE! gschultz9 2021-07-24 | It's time for another gschultz9 livestream! Tonight we're going to continue the 40th birthday celebration for the MRE (first introduced to troops in 1981) by taking a look at an old brown bag Ham and Chicken Loaf MRE from 1986. This one was sent to me by JW Speaker MRE. He got a sealed case of 1986 MREs a while back and sent me this one because it was actually one of my favorite menus when I was in the Army way back when (believe it or not!). JW reviewed a Pork Patty menu from this case and it was in pretty good shape (well, for a 35 year old MRE anyway), so I have kind of high hopes for this one.And a disclaimer for those who don't like/watch these livestreams. PLEASE understand that I have not moved to a livestream-only format. The past year-and-a-half has been pretty challenging for a number of reasons. I still have not been able to get back to the regular reviews and can't say when I will. I completely understand that the livestreams are not for everyone, and I definitely understand (and agree) that it's not always much fun trying to watch a two-hour livestream video when it is no longer live. BUT, as I mentioned, I simply haven't been able to film, edit and post new videos for a long time. The ease of making a livestream video means that I have at least been able to put out SOME kind of content for those that choose to watch it. My intention is not to only make livestream videos from now on, but since I can't honestly say WHEN I'll be able to get back to the regular videos, at least these are SOMETHING at a time when otherwise I wouldn't be in a position to post ANYTHING on the channel at all. The streams have also been a GREAT way to keep in contact with the community (that part of it that watches livestreams anyway), and the interactive nature of the live chat has been absolutely awesome and much more immediate than trying to respond to video comments. It would be great if more people could join in on the fun, but like I said, I know the streams aren't for everyone. And of course even if you DO want to tune in but it's at a time you're not available, then you're kind of out of luck. Last time I did this menu was about five years ago. It was a first year of production one from 2013 and at the time was one of the freshest MREs I'd ever had. This 2014 one is about five years old now and came from a desert environment in Ft. Irwin, CA. I don't know how well (or not well) it was stored, but unfortunately it was definitely showing some signs of being out-of-date. The only real difference between the 2013 and 2014 menus that I've reviewed were very minor: they changed the cookie from Oatmeal to Chocolate Chip, and the Cheese Spread was switched from Bacon to plain.

Other names considered included "MRE Review: Take Two" and MRE Review Deja Vu".I've been thinking about re-visiting some MRE menus that I've reviewed in the past. As I've been doing reviews since 2011 it occurred to me that it might be worth checking out some updated menus that I've tried in the past. In general I am more than happy to review the same entree multiple times in different forms of MREs (brown bag vs modern, genuine government MREs, TOTMs, commercial MREs from different companies like XMRE, Meal Kit Supply, MRE Nation and the civilian ones from the government contractors that make the genuine ones: Sopakco, Ameriqual and Wormick), but try not to repeat the same menu in the same MRE type. I'm not sure how many of these I'll do, but the first two will be the ones featured in this intro video.
