Meet A23a — the largest iceberg on the planet.
It broke off from the Antarctic ice shelf back in 1986 and for decades remained motionless, grounded on the seafloor. Recently, however, the iceberg broke free and began its long drift across the Southern Ocean. At the beginning of 2025, there were global concerns that it might collide with South Georgia Island, but instead A23a ran aground. By the summer of 2025, though, it had fractured into several pieces and lost about 1,000 square kilometers of its area.
