A-10 Warthog in Action - Fairchild Republic Thunderbolt ii Firing Gau-8 30mm Cannon in Live Fire Exercise on the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR), about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The A-10, affectionately known as the “Warthog” entered service as far back as 1976 and was specifically designed for close air support, including attacking tanks, armoured vehicles, and other ground targets. The aircraft was built around its primary weapon a General Electric30 mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon - a hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-type gun. The A-10 airframe was reinforced with 1,200 pounds (540 kg) of titanium armour to protect the cockpit, pilots and aircraft avionics allowing the aircraft to survive direct hits from armour-piercing and high-explosive shells. Short take-off and landing capability and an easy to maintain design made the A-10 an ideal support aircraft for ground forces. It first saw combat in the 1991 Gulf War – destroying 900 Iraqi tanks, 2,000 other military vehicles and 1,200 artillery weapons. The A-10 also engaged and shot down 2 Iraqi helicopters with the GAU-8 cannon. The A-10 can also carry an impressive 16,000 pounds of mixed weaponry on 8 under-wing and 3 under-fuselage pylon stations, including 500 pound Mk-82 and 2,000 pounds Mk-84 series low/high drag bombs, incendiary cluster bombs, combined effects munitions, mine dispensing munitions, AGM-65 Maverick, and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles.
