I was a kid living in London when the Valery and Galina Panov applied to emigrate to Israel in 1972.
As a consequence, they were expelled from the Kirov Ballet and forbidden from taking class for the two years it took international pressure to procure their exit visas in 1974.
They settled in Israel but toured abroad and it was during one of these tours (1974 or 1975 or 1976) that I saw them perform in London - I think the ‘Le Corsaire’ pas de deux, but I’m not sure. I recall old balletomanes talking about the toll on Valery Panov’s technique that the two years absence form class had brought bout.
This is Act 1 of a 1968 Kirov production of ‘Swan Lake’ with Yelena Yevteyevaas Odette/Odile and John Markovsky as Prince Siegfried.
Valery Panov is the jester and it’s appropriate, given this upload is to feature this Jewish dancer, that the footage begins and ends with him executing a series of turns.
