While I described the Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches as a warm hug (which I stand by and also applies here so far), I think it’s also that these books evoke all of the wonder and charm of the best of middle grade, while managing to frame that for adult audiences, with a uniquely adult sense of sadness, which is a magic of its own. A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping tackles some heavier themes, and the ending is to quote “bittersweet, but not bitter,” but I loved the character and world here that retained so much charm. And I love that the magic had a cost here. Also, it’s funny. The banter is top-tier and there’s a zombie chicken.
