Passage of Time | A (very) brief crash course into Neanderthal studies and a few book recommendations @passageoftime8561 | Uploaded September 2020 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Hi All, I figured my debut into the world of uploads should focus on my area of research, Neanderthals. I recently watched a video (I mention it was Justin at Triumphal Reads but I could be wrong, it was a few weeks back) where it was highlighted that there is a serious lack of books for the general public regarding human prehistory and archaeology.
I thought I would recommend a few books by reputable scholars regarding Neanderthals and a few other random archaeological books I have in my collection that might be of interest.
Correction - I state that the type specimen of Neanderthals is from Heidelberg….it’s not. It’s from the Neander Valley, hence the name Neanderthal (duh). And in fact, the skeleton that was studied by Boule which gave Neanderthals a negative image was from La Chapelle-aux-Saints and is not the type specimen at all…! My bad.
Key Terms
Palaeolithic - The earliest phase of hominin evolution, defined by the main tool form used (stone). Date range: 3.3 million years ago to 10 thousand years ago (ka).
Middle Palaeolithic - Specifically refers to the development of Homo heidelbergenis and Homo neanderthalensis in Europe (300,000 ka to roughly 40 ka)
Upper Palaeolithic - The terminal phase of the Palaeolithic in Europe; 50ka to 10ka
Hominin - the group of species that includes the genus Homo and other bipedal genera which are the extinct ancestors of humans. An example includes “Lucy” (Australopithecus afarensis)
“Type” Fossil - the specimen or fossil discovered which becomes the defining specimen for a newly discovered species
Books mentioned:
Neanderthals:
The Smart Neanderthal - Clive Finlayson
The Humans Who Went Extinct - Clive Finlayson
Neanderthal Man - Svante Pääbo
Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art - Rebecca Wragg Sykes
Random archaeology mentions:
After the Ice - Steve Mithen
The Archaeology of Death and Burial - Mike Parker Pearson
Archaeological Theory - Michael Johnson
Anthropology books:
The Plains Cree - David Mendelbaum
Grateful Prey - Robert Brightman
Soul Hunters - Rane Willerslev
