Unique among British castles for its triangular shape. The moated castle was first built in the 1200's and is outside Dumfries in Southwest Scotland. Over the years, the castle was the sight of much fighting and besieged many times the rebuilt util 1640 when it was abandoned. During its time, it served as a defensive fortress and as a posh, fashionable and comfortable home. Now in ruins, the decorations that can still be seen are gorgeous and each holds meaning. You can picture real life in a castle with bread ovens and fireplaces. It's located in a beautiful, green area with the cutest Highland Cattle (or Hairy Coos) just by the parking area! The visitor centre sells tickets, has a small souvenir shop, restrooms and a small exhibition about the siege of Caerlaverock Castle.
