Winners of the AR Emerging awards 2024, A Threshold ‘try to give publicness to every project.’ Even in the private house commissions that sustain many young practices, A Threshold have pushed for public benefit.
‘Nowhere is this more evident than in a project dubbed Subterranean Ruins,’ writes Reuben J Brown in a profile of A Threshold, founded by Avinash Ankalge and Harshith Nayak. When a Bangalore-based furniture businessman commissioned the pair to design a weekend guest house at his orchards south‑east of the city, A Threshold ‘had a different idea altogether.’ ‘What happens for the other three to four days when he’s in the city?’, they asked. ‘Could it be more than a house – a kindergarten for the village school, or a space for workshops and exhibitions?’
The project is a kind of bridge for A Threshold, whose future work is stocked full of directly public-facing projects – including schools, a temple and the adaptive reuse of a former factory complex.
