In November 1887, Sherlock Holmes made a first, underwhelming appearance in Beeton's Christmas Annual. This tale of murder and the Wild West makes for an unlikely Christmas story, but it was the first glimmer of Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic character and many adventures to come.
