Many processes of change have transformed our world over the past several decades at a stunning pace. The growth in global population, the expansion of a standardized industrial technology infrastructure around the planet, the great acceleration of economic activity, the expansion of the market system around the world, the advent of information technology, and a global telecommunications network that interconnects billions of people.
This short guide explains how, given these changes, a new approach to innovation and change is now much needed - systems innovation. To do this kind of systems-level innovation requires an awareness and understanding of whole systems that comes from systems thinking. Systems thinking is a way of looking at the world; it is what we call a holistic paradigm, meaning that it enables us to look at, analyze, and talk about whole systems rather than simply looking at their parts.
More than this, it will also require new ways of organizing through collaborative networks. Systems innovation is about restructuring the way a system is arranged to create new patterns of organization that are more decentralized, networked, and collaborative in their ways of working and relating.
