Watch "A Son's Status", a Galatians 4 expository sermon on moving from the slavery of works based religion to spiritual adulthood in Christ.

In Galatians 4:1-11, the Apostle Paul uses a powerful cultural analogy of a child under guardians to illustrate our spiritual inheritance. Before the coming of Christ, God's people were kept under the strict tutelage of the Mosaic Law. This period of spiritual childhood was designed to govern behavior and point to the need for a Savior.

With the arrival of Jesus, believers are granted full adoption and brought into spiritual adulthood. Returning to legalism or trying to earn justification by faith through human effort is a rejection of this freedom. Paul warns that reverting to works based salvation is equivalent to returning to pagan slavery and the elemental things of the world.

True religion is never found in our own works or strict observance of rituals. As believers, we must fully embrace our status as sons and heirs through the finished work of Jesus Christ alone.

Key Biblical Takeaways:

Any attempt to achieve salvation by works represents the basic religious approach of a world estranged from God.

God perfectly timed the arrival of Christ to deliver His people from the slavery of works based religion and into full spiritual maturity.

Relying on the law for righteousness after receiving the status of an adopted son in Christ is a dangerous return to spiritual bondage.

True transformation only comes through salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone, never through powerless human traditions.
