Title: A Soft Three-Axis Load Cell Using Liquid-Filled 3D Microchannels Embedded in a Highly Deformable Elastomer
Abstract:
The advances in soft robotics technologies have been increasing the need of soft sensors for better human-robot interactions. This paper describes a soft 3-axis force sensor composed of a soft-rigid multi-material structure embedded with microfluidic pressure sensitive channels. The pressure sensitive channels are filled with a liquid conductor and have two functional purposes as they are divided into a total of seven segments for an increased spatial resolution. One is for measuring normal forces located underneath force plates which play a role in transmitting the applied force to microchannels. All the others are for measuring shear forces at the side of the force plates. When an applied force is transmitted to microchannels through force plates and deforms certain microchannels, this makes it possible to detect the directions and magnitudes of the applied force depending on which channels provide changes of signals. The proposed sensor outputs a total of seven signals. The combinations of signals from channels are various based on the direction of the applied forces. Therefore, although the proposed sensor has a limited number of force plates, it is possible to interpolate the sensor signals and decouple applied force components in x, y, and z axes.

Title: Real-Time CPU-Based Large-Scale 3D Mesh Reconstruction
Abstract:
In Robotics, especially in this era of autonomous driving, mapping is one key ability of a robot to be able to navigate through an environment, localize on it and analyze its traversability. To allow for real-time execution on constrained hardware, the map usually estimated by feature-based or semi-dense SLAM algorithms is a sparse point cloud; a richer and more complete representation of the environment is desirable. Existing dense mapping algorithms require extensive use of GPU computing and they hardly scale to large environments; incremental algorithms from sparse points still represent an effective solution when light computational effort is needed and big sequences have to be processed in real-time. In this paper we improved and extended the state of the art incremental manifold mesh algorithm proposed in [1] and extended in [2]. While these algorithms do not achieve real-time and they embed points from SLAM or Structure from Motion only when their position is fixed, in this paper we propose the first incremental algorithm able to reconstruct a manifold mesh in real-time through single core CPU processing which is also able to modify the mesh according to 3D points updates from the underlying SLAM algorithm. We tested our algorithm against two state of the art incremental mesh mapping systems on the KITTI dataset, and we showed that, while accuracy is comparable, our approach is able to reach real-time performances thanks to an order of magnitude speed-up. Title: On Bisection Continuous Collision Checking Method: Spherical Joints and Minimum Distance to Obstacles
Abstract:
In this paper, we adapt the Continuous Collision Checking Detection (CCD) method proposed in [1] to efficiently handle the case of spherical and two revolute joints, this kind of joints is very common in modern robotic systems. The new formulations provide more tight motion bounds, thus increase the success rate of checking collision-free paths. We also propose an extension to get the minimum distance to obstacles along a path, this information is primordial as it allows sampling-based motion planning techniques to sort collision-free paths according to their minimum clearance. We have integrated our implementation into a sampling-based motion planning technique and validated it through simulation and on the real Baxter research robot. The experiments revealed that the method not only does not miss any collision between the robot and the obstacles, but also the minimum distance extension provides the path with the maximum clearance at no additional computational cost.
