An analysis of the Marian apparitions at Fatima in 1917. I discuss both the appearances to the children and the subsequent 'miracle of the sun'. I highlight the likely roles of psychological factors such as religious absorption, suggestibility, and expectation and generating the Marian apparitions to the young children. I suggest that the reports of strange solar phenomena can be explained as optical illusions caused by high-altitude clouds and afterimages.
