Three Winston film projects were released in 2005, including War of the Worlds, Steven Spielberg’s remake of the 1953 film based on H.G. Wells’ classic novel about an alien invasion.
As the film was originally scripted, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) was to awaken to Rachel’s (Dakota Fanning) screams in the basement and stomp on a pod near her, out of which emerges a baby alien, still alive and moving. “Ray kills the baby alien,” said project lead Lindsay Macgowan, “and Rachel runs out of the basement and outside — and you see this field covered in red weed, with pods everywhere. Ray starts smashing all these pods, and that’s when the tripod comes and grabs him.”
In this video, you can see a short tour at Stan Winston Studio while the SWS crew works on the Alien Pods for War of the Worlds (2005).
