In 1991, Russian naturalist and geographer Arkady Tishkov set out as a member of the Soviet-Chinese glaciological expedition along the borders of Nepal, Tibet and China. On this expedition, professor Tishkov reportedly observed a Himalayan primate that was not then, and is not now, recognized by science.
