AlboPepper - Drought Proof Urban Gardening | A Raised Bed Garden for Grandpa - How to Assist Seniors with Gardening @Albopepper | Uploaded October 2014 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
I just got back from a fun project at my Grandparents' house. We've upgraded my Grandpa's in-ground farming plot to a new location. And it has been converted to DIY raised beds. My Dad and brothers (Al's Landscaping) played a big part in this task. Watch the time-lapse to see how we build these affordable garden planters.
This gardening technique is great for anyone, but it can especially help the elderly or handicapped. Seniors, who may have bad knees or difficulty bending over will find this method for growing food to be refreshing indeed!
This is no-till gardening and so no rototiller is required. Weeds are greatly reduced. That means easy gardening! Drainage is significantly improved, which means healthier plants. In the Spring, the dirt in your raised bed will thaw sooner than in the ground. That allows you to extend your season.
Also, note the difference in the lighting between our old plot and the new planters. Getting lots of full sunlight is crucial to growing big, abundant produce. Your vegetables will thank you!
