So, today we are out and about walking in the Cotswold town of Winchcombe. This walk is an unusual one as it is the shortest walk on the channel (currently) but also took the longest to complete! In fact it took close to 30 attempts and over two weekends to bag this walk. The idea for this walk stemmed from when I was driving along this busy B4632 Road (Hailes Road) and as I did I was very drawn to the eclectic blend of historic Tudor and Cotswold style houses. I thought to myself wouldn't it be amazing if I could walk this section of this road but with no traffic or people around. About a month later I tried to put the plan into action. The first weekend I had to give up after nearly one and half hours as each attempt was foiled by traffic travelling along the road and then I found that this road became increasingly busy as early morning transitions to morning, even on a early morning I worked out that a vehicle travels along the road every 120 seconds on average (approximately). Also, you may notice there is a newsagents on the left hand side of the road soon into the video (John Keeling), this little local store sees quite a lot of custom on a Sunday morning with customers pulling up outside in their cars as well as on foot or bicycle. On the second weekend two gentleman bumped into each other as one was going in and the other coming out from the newsagent, they stopped and chatted for over half an hour. Obviously local newsagents are vital to communities as they provide many essential products & services as well as in a way they act as a social hub for some people, so thank you to John Keeling! Anyway, once they said there goodbyes that was my cue and I set about another attempt at the walk but frustratingly to be foiled again by travelling traffic multiple times! I was going to pack up at that point as I thought I am not going to be able to complete this walk in the way I had envisaged! But for some reason I thought to myself I will try one last time and that was when I managed to almost get to my imaginary finishing point, although you can see a car approaching just as the video ends. Obviously with this walk time was of the essence, so my pace along the road was not the usual OAAW pace which you may well be accustomed to. You may notice that there is no up & down movement of the camera, this is because the camera was mounted on the handlebars of a bicycle.
This video may well be one of a kind as I have looked here on YT as I could not find anything matching it and unless a TV /Film company closed the road off I would be surprised to see this walk being duplicated anytime soon...You seen it here first ;
I will return to Winchcombe one day for a thorough early morning walk and explore.
Winchcombe is a civil parish and market town located in Gloucestershire. It comes under the borough of Tewkesbury. It is about 6 miles north-east of the Spa town of Cheltenham. Winchcombe now has an estimated population of close to 5,400.
The town has multiple amenities and attractions, including a vast variety of stores & shops, restaurants, public houses, churches and even a castle - Sudeley Castle as well as other historic nearby sites such as Belas Knap a Neolithic long barrow dating back to around 3000 BCE.
Winchcombe is well worth a visit as it is a real jem in the heart of the Cotswolds. It has plenty of car parking within walking distance of the town centre.
There are no hidden OAAW logos within this video.
