In a world where e-mobility is on the rise, the demand for lithium has never been higher.
But did you know that a staggering 27% of global lithium production still ends up as waste? Due to the impracticality of economically viable and eco-friendly recycling methods, these lithium remnants have long posed challenges for our planet.
Enter the RELiEF project, a beacon of innovation and sustainability.
With a clear goal to reduce the current 27% lithium waste by over 70%, RELiEF harnesses previously untapped secondary lithium sources, by treating waste material and achieving high-yield lithium recovery.
The sources are both liquid and solid. From the liquid materials, wastewater from recycling industries and organics from the pharmaceutical world are taken. For solids, mine tailing and lithium alloy waste are used. The first step is a preliminary pre-treatment to remove hazardous components and ease the subsequent leaching of lithium, so that it liberates the lithium from the solid matrix. The lithium is thereafter recovered as a multielement solution.
The extracted lithium from the purified solution is then turned into recycled lithium hydroxide, which serves two purposes: first, the validation of lithium hydroxide as a relithiation agent for an end-of-life LFP cathode material. And second, the production of Li metal, to be used as anode in next generation batteries.
Our aim is to offer a comprehensive, promising and economically attractive approach to Lithium recovery from waste sources. RELiEF’s systematic process aiming at viability, holds the potential to combat the challenges of lithium waste while contributing to a more sustainable battery industry.
Join us in supporting the RELiEF project, a step closer to a greener, more sustainable future for all.
