hey friends!
it’s mother’s day and i wanted to share a vid in the mother tongue: shanghainese aka the shanghai dialect in china!
growing up a bilingual chinese-american was a struggle because it meant being mediocre in three languages (the third being mandarin, which is a LOT worse than my shanghainese) 🤡 but i’m honestly v proud of myself for being able to transcribe this video within a day !!!! (mostly due to my procrastination & determination 😤) but i’ve come a long way; my first video in shanghainese literally took MONTHS to put together because i retained nothing of the two years of chinese school i attended in 1st and 2nd grade ahA. but we did it !!! with some help from my mom & google translate.
shanghainese is a dying and very uncommon language. if you watched the vid despite not understanding a word, i really appreciate :’) i hope it inspires you to practice learning a language that isn’t your native, be more productive, and – if you’re an immigrant kid like me – learn/embrace your mother culture. (because my childhood self did NOT want to)
