This is believed to be Part 2 of a longer documentary entitled A Power in the Land, produced in 1947 by World Wide Pictures for the Electrical Trades Union.
The film is in the form of a survey of the role of electricity in industry, medicine, entertainment and commerce and the research into its functions.
In this part we see pig iron being unloaded and steel being manufactured. Then it’s the early use of electricity in medicine, including the recording of brain patterns on an electroencephalograph and the use of lighting in film and television. It is interesting to see an early television camera being moved on what looks like a sort of wheelchair! We also see a BBC outside broadcast unit of its time. We next see the GPO Research Station at Dollis Hill where special quartz valves are developed for accurate time keeping. We finally see a machine at Birmingham University capable of splitting the atom, a cyclotron, designed by Professor Oliphant.
