Someone in the comments has already mentioned that this story might be about a wendigo. I'm not too familiar with Wendigo lore myself. If anyone knows anything about them, feel free to tell me what you know in the comments. I may need to cover them as a topic to flesh out my understanding of shapeshifters, doppelgängers, mimics, skinwalkers, etc.
