A Poetry Reading Inspired by Apollo and Phaëthon
Ekphrastic poetry project by Gabriele Tinti and Jamie McShane
As part of a reading series inspired by ancient and modern myths, poet and writer Gabriele Tinti has written a poem responding to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s Apollo and Phaëthon, a work in LACMA’s permanent collection. In this video, actor Jamie McShane reads Tinti’s poem.

A recent recipient of the Montale Poetry Award, Gabriele Tinti is an Italian poet and writer. He has worked with the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Roman Museum, the Capitolini Museums, the Archeological Museum in Naples, the Ara Pacis Museums, and the Colosseum and the Glyptothek of Munich, composing poems for ancient works of art. Published works include Last Words (Skira Rizzoli, 2016), a collection of found poetry in association with Andres Serrano, The Earth Will Come To Laugh and To Feast (Powerhouse Books, 2020), a poetry collection with illustrations by the artist Roger Ballen, and Ruins (Eris Press, 2021).
Jamie McShane is an American actor best known for his roles on Sons of Anarchy, Southland, The Passage, Bloodline, and Mank. He has been cast as one of the leading actors in Tim Burton's upcoming Addams Family Netflix series.
